Path of Exile 2 - Exciting Mercenary Class Insights

Experience thrilling gameplay in Path of Exile 2 as the mercenary class redefines combat with shooter elements and unique abilities.

Every session spent in Path of Exile 2 has only heightened my anticipation for its release.

I've experienced various classes, including the hunter, monk, witch, warrior, and my latest venture into the mercenary class.

Despite spending over two hours with each class, I find myself eager to return, particularly as the beta launch on December 6 approaches.

In this discussion, I'll zero in on the mercenary class. Although it may not be my preferred choice, it offers a distinct twist on the gameplay typical of Path of Exile by incorporating elements reminiscent of a top-down shooter.

Armed with a crossbow, the mercenary begins combat by unleashing seven bolts at foes. As players progress, they can unlock skill gems that introduce a range of new capabilities—snipe enemies from afar, fire rapid armor-piercing shots, launch grenades, freeze opponents, ignite foes, and more, enhancing your combat effectiveness.

This shooter-inspired approach is a deliberate design choice, as Jonathan Rogers from Grinding Gear Games highlighted how they drew inspiration from the shooter genre to create this class. While I found myself missing the satisfying feel of the monk's staff or the nimbleness of the hunter’s bow, I recognize that the mercenary class could appeal to newcomers familiar with different gaming genres, easing their entry into the ARPG landscape.

However, the mercenary class does face a challenge with frequent reloading, which can lead to downtime, especially in the early stages of gameplay when switching firing modes or running out of ammunition.

The mercenary starts to gain strength and synergy as you progress to the graveyard area within Path of Exile 2.

At this juncture, all classes begin to show their potential and offer insights into what endgame has in store. By this stage, I had acquired a grenade launcher that unleashed three projectiles with an enhanced area of effect, an ice gun that could slow and freeze enemies, and a fire shot that ignited foes while pushing them back. These abilities laid a strong foundation for customizing your character through the passive skill tree, allowing for personalized growth as you advance through the campaign.

A significant part of my preview event focused on a closed presentation that explored the endgame journey. Although I didn’t get to experience it first-hand, Rogers elaborated on the expansive endgame challenges players will face, including a vast world map and engaging activities designed to keep players invested for countless hours.

In our roundtable discussion, Rogers emphasized the importance of a compelling endgame experience, stating that without it, players familiar with Path of Exile 1 might dismiss the sequel as a lesser version.

The upcoming December release promises the first half of the campaign—acts 1-3—expected to take around 25 hours to finish. Once players complete the campaign, they will encounter exciting new opportunities to enhance their builds.

During a two-hour presentation, I caught a glimpse of some endgame pursuits, including a variety of modes set to debut in early access.

Among them are sequels to beloved leagues from the original Path of Exile, with new content rolling out over time. One mode I experienced was the Trial of Sekhemas, where players navigate rooms filled with unique challenges, such as defeating red enemies to fill a blood chalice or surviving waves of increasingly difficult foes within a time limit.

Each challenge culminates in a boss fight, offering players the option to redeem keys collected during their run for rewards or to advance further for better loot. However, failing to succeed or taking too much damage could send you back to the start. Players can collect water as currency to purchase items that aid them on their journey, alongside discovering or crafting relics, with one relic hinting at a unique item but requiring completion of the trial with only 1 HP.

This trial represents just one of the eight primary endgame modes planned for early access launch.

Additionally, overcoming these trials grants access to the Altar of Ascendancy, where players can choose one of three ascendency classes. Initially, only two classes will be available, one of which is the witch’s Infernalist class, summoning a hellhound that ignites everything nearby and absorbs damage on your behalf.

We also got a glimpse of the witch’s demon transformation, where she becomes a winged beast, enhancing speed, damage, and spellcasting but at the cost of sustaining damage while in that form.

This introductory endgame mode promises to provide hundreds of hours of engaging challenges.

I also previewed another endgame feature known as the Temple of Chaos, accessed in act 3 upon obtaining a token from the trial master. This event serves as a sequel to the Ultimatum league from the original Path of Exile. Players enter the temple and choose modifiers, such as blood globules that float and damage you or shocking turrets that create electrical hazards.

These modifiers combine, and players must still complete standard map challenges like surviving enemy waves or escorting a massive hammer across the area to its target.

In the recently unveiled details about Path of Exile 2, players can expect a rich array of endgame content centered around the ziggurat area.

This location serves as a hub where adventurers can navigate a world map, journeying to various regions to eradicate corruption.

Activities in this space include clearing out towers, defeating formidable bosses, and tackling breaches.

Additionally, the sequel introduces an expedition league, where players strategically plant dynamite to uncover valuable loot and enhance their gear with new abilities.

Delirium maps are also on the horizon, ramping up difficulty levels while offering more opportunities to gain passive skills from the extensive passive tree.

A significant highlight is the introduction of an uber pinnacle boss, accessible via unique keys, designed to challenge seasoned players with its extreme difficulty, making it a noteworthy addition to the game.

Rewards are set to evolve with a new gem system that players can utilize for their weapons, armor, and passive skills.

This system allows for unique gems to be socketed within the passive tree, providing enhancements to nearby unlocked abilities, or even bestowing additional boosts to amplify builds further.

Moreover, an entirely distinct atlas skill tree is being implemented, enabling players to unlock specific perks for each endgame mode.

The preview event showcased an abundance of content, hinting that each described mode could merit its own detailed strategy discussion to optimize player rewards.

The sheer volume of loot to pursue across multiple systems promises an engaging experience for players.

Importantly, the Grinding Gear Games team mentioned that what has been revealed is just the beginning; the number of playable classes, story acts, adversaries, and bosses will double during the early access phase, with more league sequels planned for endgame activities.

Path of Exile 2 will launch as a free-to-play title, but players eager for early access on December 6th will need to purchase a $30 supporter key, which also provides in-game currency.

For loyal supporters who have invested $500 or more in the original Path of Exile over the last decade, access will be granted at no cost, recognizing their commitment to the franchise.
